A motorcyclist sustained severe injuries Saturday after being trapped beneath a 10-ton commercial truck in Sawtelle, authorities said.

Police and fire crews responded at 8:36 a.m. to reports of a person trapped underneath a truck near 11600 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

It took crews about 10 minutes to free the motorcyclist, whose name and age were not released, from beneath a commercial truck used for household debris removal, Humphrey said.

The motorcyclist was taken to UCLA Medical Center in Westwood.

“Paramedics who treated him believed that his proper use of a motorcycle helmet saved his life. It was severely damaged and it was believed to have minimized (his) head injuries,” Humphrey said.

Police at the scene were investigating the cause of the crash. No other injuries were reported.
