The hunt continued Monday for three men in their 20s who are wanted in connection with the shooting death of a check-cashing business worker after a brief struggle in the parking lot of a Buena Park gas station.
Police released a security camera image of the suspects and asked for public help in tracking down the suspects. The assailants apparently followed the victim from the check-cashing business believing he was carrying money, but the three fled with no cash or any valuables after the shooting.
A second check-cashing business worker was not in the vehicle at the time of the killing and was not harmed.
“Evidence suggests the victims were targeted because they work at a check-cashing business,” Buena Park police Sgt Mike Lovchik said. “(The) suspects followed the victims to the Mobil gas (station).”
The victim, identified as 24-year-old Maher Yousef of La Mirada, stayed in his car while his passenger went into the Mobil Mini-Mart just before 10:30 p.m. Friday, Lovchik said. The gas station and market are at the intersection of Beach and Artesia boulevards.
“Three male black suspects approached Yousef while he sat in the driver seat of his car. All three brandished weapons and demanded the money,” he said.
“A brief struggle broke out between Yousef and one gunman from the driver window. A second hooded gunman approached the passenger side open door and shot Yousef in the head from close range,” Lovchik said.
The three suspects fled on foot northbound, he said. Nothing was taken and the witness was not hurt.
Yousef was taken in critical condition to a nearby hospital, where he later died, Lovchik said.
The first suspect is described as a black man in his 20s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, heavy build, wearing a brown hoodie, checkered short, dark pants and blue shoes, he said.
The second suspect was described as a black man between 20 and 30 years old, 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing about 200 pounds, with a shaved head, possible facial hair, wearing a striped V-neck shirt, jeans and white tennis shoes, Lovchik said.
The third suspect was described as a black man in his 20s, 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a thin build and wearing a dark hoodie, the sergeant said.
Police asked anyone with information to call the Buena Park Police Department at (714) 562-3901.
