A SWAT team arrested a man on a bus in the Acton area after he was reported to be in possession of a firearm and drifting in and out of consciousness.

Deputies responded about 1 p.m. to a report of an armed male on a Santa Clarita Transit bus on Sierra Highway in the area of Soledad Canyon Road, according to Sgt. Brian Allen of the sheriff’s Santa Clarita Valley Station.

The bus driver stopped the bus, disabled it and evacuated the passengers, Allen said. When deputies arrived, they set up a perimeter but were unable to make contact with the suspect, so they called in the SWAT team, he said.

Eventually, the SWAT team contacted the man — later identified as Rashad Hampton of Newhall — and arrested him about 2:50 p.m. on suspicion of weapons violations, Allen said.

A loaded handgun was recovered, the sergeant said.

Both sides of Sierra Highway were closed as the situation played out.
