The coroner’s office Friday released the name of a big rig driver killed when he swerved off the Golden State (5) Freeway in Castaic to avoid colliding with a sedan.
The trucker, 71-year-old Robert Lee Bickmore of Tulare, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred about 11:35 a.m. Thursday on the southbound 5, north of Lake Hughes Road.
A Bakersfield woman was driving in one of the left lanes when her 2015 Lexus ES350 drifted to the right, across all lanes of the southbound 5, and into the path of Bickmore’s tanker truck, which was in the slow lane, said California Highway Patrol Officer J. Greengard.
“The driver of the 2015 Peterbilt took evasive action and steered his vehicle to the right in an effort to avoid the collision. By doing this, he drove his vehicle off the freeway and down the dirt embankment where it overturned on its side,” Greengard said.
Bickmore was pinned inside the truck tractor and Los Angeles County firefighters’ attempts to save him failed, Greengard said.
