The mystery murder of one man and the wounding of another in a Hawthorne barber shop was being investigated by law enforcement authorities Sunday.

Deputies said the motive for the attack, in which two men started shooting from a parking lot into the barber shop, was unknown.

The shooting was reported at 4:10 p.m. Saturday at the barbershop in the El Segundo Crenshaw Shopping Center, in the 12800 block of Crenshaw Boulevard, said Deputy Crystal Hernandez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

According to witnesses, two male suspects were in the parking lot and started shooting into the barber shop at patrons and employees, Hernandez said. “The suspects left the location in an unknown car.”

A 31-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, she said. His name was withheld pending notification of kin.

A 29-year-old man was taken to a hospital by a friend, underwent surgery and is expected to survive, Hernandez said.

The shopping center was closed for the night as of 7 p.m., Hawthorne police said.

The intersection at El Segundo and Crenshaw boulevards was also closed for the investigation at about 7 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol, which has declared a SigAlert.

The homicide was being investigated by the sheriff’s homicide detectives and Hawthorne police but the sheriff’s department was taking the lead in this probe, according to police.

A motive for the shooting was unknown.
