A San Bernardino man who admitted driving drunk and fleeing the scene of a crash in West Covina that resulted in a 31-year-old woman’s death was sentenced Thursday to nearly 17 years in state prison.

Raymond Simon Alvarado, 23, pleaded no contest Tuesday to a felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and admitted allegations that he fled the scene of the crime, committed a DUI causing injury and personally inflicted great bodily injury during the commission of the crime.

Alvarado was under the influence of alcohol when he ran a red light in a Honda Civic, striking an Acura Integra that was turning left at the intersection of Azusa and Rowland avenues about 9:15 p.m. on Dec. 30, 2014.

Two passengers were seriously injured, with one of them, 31-year-old Sherry Yu, dying about a week later as a result of her injuries, authorities said.

Alvarado tried to run off, but was pointed out to police by a witness to the crash.
