A pickup truck driver backed into four pedestrians, critically injuring two of them, Thursday in MacArthur Park.

Paramedics were sent to the 600 block of Park View Street about 12:40 p.m. The motorist was driving in reverse when he struck and knocked down a parking meter before entering the park and hitting four men, Los Angeles police Officer Aareon Jefferson told reporters at the scene.

All four were transported for hospital treatment. Two were in critical condition and two had non-life-threatening injuries, according to Jefferson.

At least one report emerged that the driver may have been trying to avoid parking enforcement officers when the crash occurred, but Jefferson said the incident was being treated as an accident and the driver, who remained at the scene, was cooperating with the police investigation.

The driver was taken to a hospital, police said, but it was unclear if he was injured.
