Police Monday were fired at through a Brea motel door when they responded to a report of a suicidal man.

Police were called to the Hyland Motel at 727 S. Brea Blvd. about 3 p.m., according to Lt. Darrin Devereux. When the officers arrived, they knocked on the door and shots rang out, he said.

The officers, who escaped injury, retreated for cover and did not return fire, the lieutenant added.

SWAT officers were summoned to negotiate with the unidentified barricaded suspect, Devereux said.
