A 12-year-old boy playing in an Azusa park was hurt by flying debris after a car driven by a suspected drunk driver smashed through a nearby gate, police said.
The suspected DUI driver was held at the scene by people in the area until police could get to the scene.
The crash was reported at 7:18 p.m. Sunday in Zacatecas Park in the 900 block of West First Street, the Azusa Police Department reported.
The Mitsubishi Eclipse went through a chain link gate and fence, struck a tree and became disabled in shrubbery, police said. Several bystanders detained the driver until police arrived.
The 12-year-old boy was struck by debris and taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, police said.
The driver, identified as 28-year-old Eduardo Castillo of Covina, was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and was being held in the Azusa jail in lieu of $100,000 bail, police said. His arraignment was scheduled Tuesday in West Covina Superior Court.
