A 72-year-old drunken hit-and-run suspect was in custody Sunday for allegedly running down both a 15-year-old girl and a year-old baby in a stroller pushed by the teen in a Hawthorne crosswalk.
Both the teen and the baby were hospitalized in serious condition, according to authorities.
They were hit about 4 p-m Saturday at the intersection of 133rd Street and Hawthorne Boulevard by an S-U-V allegedly driven by a woman identified by law enforcement officials as Donna Marie Higgins.
Police said a witness followed the S-U-V for about a block before blocking it with his or her own car until officers arrived and placed Higgins under arrest. The northbound lanes of Hawthorne Boulevard were shut down for more than four hours after the crash and a SigAlert was declared by the California Highway Patrol.
