A suspect is hospitalized in critical condition Monday following an officer-involved shooting in Long Beach, authorities said.
Officers were conducting an investigation into an armed robbery at about 3:20 p.m. Sunday near Pacific Coast Highway and Lemon Avenue, according to Marlene Arrona of the Long Beach Police Department Media Relations Detail.
“As the officers approached, multiple suspects in the parking lot of local businesses, some suspects fled on foot while others fled in a vehicle,” Arrona said.
Officers immediately detained suspects who fled on foot and also located a firearm, she said.
“The fleeing vehicle continued until it collided with an unoccupied parked vehicle across the street,” Arrona said. “As one suspect was fleeing from the vehicle, an officer-involved shooting occurred.” The suspect was not injured.
Police chased another suspect who fled on foot. “During the encounter, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” she said. “A male adult suspect sustained a gunshot injury and was transported to a local hospital. The suspect is in critical condition.”
Another suspect was arrested a short time later a block away inside a containment perimeter, Arrona said.
In all, five men, including the hospitalized suspect, and one juvenile were arrested in connection with the armed robbery, she said.
The LBPD and Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office were investigating the officer-involved shooting.
