A 34-year-old man was in custody Thursday on suspicion of shooting and wounding a “total stranger” during an argument in MacArthur Park west of downtown Los Angeles.

The shooting occurred around 6:10 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Alvarado and Sixth streets. The men were “total strangers” and it wasn’t immediately clear what the argument was about, said Detective Frank Marino of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Rampart Station.

The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, shot the 26-year- old victim and fled, prompting a short pursuit, Marino said. He was  found in the 700 block of South Coronado Street.

The suspect told police the younger man had punched him, Marino said.

The victim’s condition was not immediately available but police said he was conscious and breathing when he was taken from the scene in an ambulance.
