Three firefighters suffered electric shocks while battling a blaze that destroyed the garages of a fourplex in Long Beach Friday morning, authorities said.
The firefighters were doing well Friday morning after being taken to the hospital, said Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Jake Heflin. They were part of several crews that responded to the fire, which broke out around 1:35 a.m. in the 5300 block of Cedar Avenue.
Responding firefighters found the garages of the housing unit heavily involved with fire, which spread to the rear unit of the complex, Heflin said.
The unit sustained smoke damage and some fire damage to its attic but the unit is not currently occupied, Heflin said.
The shocks suffered by the firefighters were believed linked to the collapse of some overhead power lines, Heflin said. A Southern California Edison crew was summoned to the scene to secure the lines, he added.
The firefighters reported feeling ill from the shock and were taken to a hospital for further evaluation, Heflin said.
Investigators were on scene this morning to determine the cause of the fire and tally the damage.
