A shirtless intruder Saturday was expected to survive being shot in the head and a security guard he fought with was in stable condition from stab wounds to the face after a wild melee outside a Malibu home owned by supermodel Miranda Kerr.
The Australian model purchased the property in 2014 following her split from ex-husband Orlando Bloom and lived there with her 5-year-old son Flynn, according to one published report.
But a TV station said she moved out about one month ago and was thus not on the scene at the time of the fierce battle between the intruder and guard.
The 33-year-old Kerr is now engaged to Snapchat co-founder Evan Spiegel.
Deputies responded shortly after 11 a.m. Friday to the home in the 4900 block of Puesta del Sol, near Encinal Canyon Road, to a report of a fight involving a person with a gun, according to Sgt. James Braden of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s Malibu/Lost Hills Station.
“When the deputies arrived at the residence they found an armed security guard was involved in a physical altercation with an intruder,” Braden said.
The suspect, whose name was not immediately available but who was initially believed to be a homeless man, stabbed the guard, who in turn shot the knife-wielding man, according to the sergeant.
Both men were hospitalized. The guard, who was airlifted from the scene, was in stable condition and the suspect was in critical condition with non-life-threatening injuries, Braden said.
No residents were at the home at the time and the suspect never entered the residence, he said. The home is in a pricey palm-tree laden hillside area just north of Pacific Coast Highway where many of the structures provide residents with spectacular white-water views of the nearby Pacific Ocean.
Witnesses told reporters at the scene that a shirtless man apparently jumped over a wall of the private compound and was confronted by the security guard. When the man refused to leave, a struggle ensued.
