Construction has been completed on the latest runway at Los Angeles International Airport to receive federally required safety improvements, and work on a fourth and final runway project is set to begin this weekend, airport officials said Monday.

The 6R/24L runway was reopened at full length Monday morning, and construction on the 7L/25R runway will begin Saturday, officials said.

The 7L/25R runway will be shortened, so that construction can be done on the east end and connecting taxiways. The runway will be completely closed in January, with all construction work expected to be finished in June.

Airport officials said passengers should expect some flight delays during the construction period.
