A 22-year-old South Gate man was killed and his three passengers were critically injured when he lost control of his car and slammed into a tree in Long Beach, authorities said.

The crash on southbound Shoreline Drive, just north of Broadway, was reported just after midnight, police said.

The young man was driving a 2002 Ford Focus on Shoreline under the 6th Street underpass when he lost control of his car, went over the center median and crashed into a palm tree, according to police.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

His three passengers were transported to a hospital in critical condition by Long Beach Fire Department paramedics, police said.
