A 58-year-old man killed in the unincorporated Willowbrook area had gotten into a shootout with a store worker who was also wounded and is considered both a victim and suspect, the sheriff’s department reported Wednesday.

The shooting — believed to be gang-related — was reported at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the 1000 block of East El Segundo Boulevard, near Central Avenue and the border with Compton, according to the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

The employee, a 21-year-old man, was standing in the doorway of the business when a man arrived in his vehicle, parked in the business parking lot and entered the store to make a purchase.

The two got into an argument and as the customer was leaving, both he and the worker pulled handguns and shot at one another, according to the sheriff’s department.

The employee ran east on El Segundo Boulevard in an attempt to get away but collapsed, while the other man drove west from the scene and crashed into a no-parking sign on the sidewalk.

“He was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound he sustained to his upper torso,” according to a sheriff’s department statement.

The coroner’s office identified him as 58-year-old Cedric Beadega- Staten, whose city of residence was unknown.

“The 21-year-old man was transported to a local hospital and treated for a gunshot wound to his upper torso,” according to the sheriff’s department, which reported that he is in critical condition but expected to survive.
