Buena Park police Monday were investigating the death of a 32-year-old man in an apparent domestic dispute involving a woman who claimed she stabbed him in self-defense, according to investigators.

The man was identified as Patrick Longsworth of Los Angeles, according to the Orange County coroner. The woman, whose name was withheld, was questioned and then released, but the investigation is continuing, Buena Park police Sgt. Mike Lovchik said.

The woman told police Longsworth attacked her, prompting her to stab him, Lovchik said. She was taken to an area hospital to be treated for injuries sustained in the conflict, he said.

Longsworth was rushed to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, where he was pronounced dead at 2:33 a.m. Sunday.

“We’re looking at all aspects of the situation, including the possibility of self-defense,” Lovchik said. “We’re not out and out saying it’s self-defense. It’s still an open investigation, so we’re exploring all aspects.”

Lovchik did not know if police had previously responded to domestic dispute calls at the residence in the 5801 Burnham Ave. where the stabbing occurred about 1:50 a.m. Sunday.

The woman lived in an apartment at the address of the stabbing, Lovchik said.
