One woman riding in a car was killed and three others were injured when the vehicle went over the side of the San Diego (405) Freeway in Van Nuys and landed on a homeless encampment, authorities said.
The crash was reported at 6:06 p.m. Tuesday on the southbound side of the freeway south of Roscoe Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
One person who ended up crushed beneath the car — reported by the CHP to be a female who had been inside the vehicle — was pronounced dead at the scene, Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
It wasn’t disclosed if the dead woman had been wearing a seat belt.
Two people in serious to critical condition were taken to a hospital, as was the car’s driver, who was in fair condition with non-life-threatening injuries, Stewart said.
There was no immediate word if any of the injured were among the homeless in the encampment.
A stretch of Haskell Avenue near Strathern Street was closed for some time during the investigation, she said.
