A man described by police as a rap artist was in custody Thursday on suspicion of a gang-related killing at a party in Los Angeles 14 years ago.

Jose Martin, who is in his 40s, is accused of fatally shooting Mario Eduardo Gutierrez around 2:20 a.m. Nov. 3, 2002, in the 4800 block of West 48th Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Gutierrez died at the scene.

According to police, Martin was at the party when the deejay “became involved in a fight with several gang members.”

“Mr. Gutierrez attempted to stop the fight by shooting several rounds into the air,” according to police. “Several suspects rushed and disarmed Mr. Gutierrez. They picked him up by his arms and legs, and took him outside of the residence where they shot him several times.”

Police said a warrant was issued in 2003 for the arrest of Martin, who was described as a rap artist known as “Conejo.” He fled to Mexico shortly after the killing, police said.

On Tuesday, the LAPD/FBI Fugitive Task Force, with the assistance of Baja California Preventative State Police, arrested Martin in Baja California.

He was brought back to Los Angeles, where he was booked on the murder warrant and is being held without bail, police said.
