South Gate police Friday sought public help to find a man who robbed a market at gunpoint.

The crime occurred about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at Puerta De Hierro Market, 12101 Garfield Ave., South Gate police said.

“The suspect approached the counter and pointed a black semi-automatic handgun at the victim and demanded money from the register,” a police statement said.

“The victim opened the register and the suspect reached over the counter and took approximately $1,200,” police said. “Although the victim cooperated, the suspect demanded more money and tried intimidating the victim by knocking over a display case.”

The man then fled in a dark-colored Chevrolet Suburban SUV.

Police circulated security photos of the suspect, described as Hispanic, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing about 250 pounds, with tattoos on his left shoulder, forearm and wrist. He used a black and green cloth to partially cover his face.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call police at (323) 563-5454.
