A man armed with a shotgun was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies Saturday in East Los Angeles, the third deputy-involved shooting in the county within a week.

It happened at 1:22 a.m. in the 900 block of La Verne Avenue, according to Deputy Trina Schrader.

The suspect was struck by gunfire and taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries, the Sheriff’s Information Bureau reported.

No deputies were injured, Schrader said.

Deputies were dispatched to La Verne Avenue in response to a “gunshot victim” call. When they arrived at the home to investigate, they encountered a man armed with a shotgun, officials said. Two deputies fired their weapons and the suspect was struck, the Sheriff’s Information Bureau reported.

A shotgun was recovered at the scene and detectives were still working on confirming whether someone was shot at the location prior to their arrival.

On Thursday, sheriff’s deputies were involved in a fatal shooting in Hacienda Heights where the armed suspect, who has not yet been identified, was wanted in a family disturbance in Downey.

The suspect in that shooting was contacted by Downey officers who attempted to detain him when he warned officers he had a gun and Industry Station deputies were requested.

The suspect began to reach for the handgun that was in his pocket. The deputies deployed less than lethal weapons in a continued effort to gain compliance. The suspect armed himself with the handgun, and a deputy involved shooting occurred,” a sheriff’s statement said.

No deputies were injured in this incident and the handgun was recovered.

A third deputy-involved shooting occurred Monday night in the 8700 block of Budlong Avenue in the unincorporated Westmont area near South Los Angeles.

The suspect suffered a gunshot wound and his condition was not immediately available.
