Julio Nivelo, who also goes by David Vargas, is suspected of taking an 86-pound, five-gallon aluminum pail containing the gold flakes on the afternoon of Sept. 29, according to the New York Police Department.

The pail was on the rear of an armored truck parked during a pickup, police said.

The suspect, who can be seen on surveillance video lifting the pail and fleeing the scene with it, “is believed to be in Los Angeles,” according to an NYPD statement.

Los Angeles police referred all questions about the case to the NYPD.

Nivelo is described as Hispanic, 5 feet 5 inches tall and 155 pounds, with dark hair. Anyone who spots him was urged to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at (800) 577-TIPS.
