Criminal charges were filed Thursday against a woman for an alleged knife attack on her father’s girlfriend in the Santa Fe Springs mobile home the three shared.

Janette Buena, 27, pleaded not guilty to one count each of assault with a deadly weapon and possession of cocaine, along with three counts of exhibiting a deadly weapon to police to resist arrest, according to Sarah Ardalani of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

The charges stem from an alleged run-in about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday at a trailer park in the 8000 block of Sorenson Avenue.

Police initially said Buena had been booked on suspicion of murder involving her 63-year-old father, who died of an apparent heart attack soon after police say he was stabbed in the hand during the melee.

But the woman was not charged with any crimes involving her father, according to Ardalani.

Police said Buena’s father and his girlfriend locked themselves in the bathroom and called 911.

“Several officers arrived and confronted a female suspect in the doorway of the trailer. The suspect … who also lived at the residence, retreated inside the trailer and tried to enter the locked bathroom where the victims were hiding,” said Lt. Kent Miller of the Whittier Police Department, which patrols Santa Fe Springs.

Officers followed the knife-wielding woman inside and deployed three bean bag rounds from a shotgun, hitting Buena, but she did not drop the knife, Miller said.

“Officers then used their Taser,” Miller said. “Buena fell to the ground long enough for the officers to take her into custody, although she was still resistive.”

The woman’s father and his 46-year-old girlfriend told police the attack was unprovoked, Miller said.

Buena is due back in court Dec. 30, when a date is scheduled to be set for a hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence to require her to stand trial.
