A 23-year-old man was sentenced Thursday to 25 years to life in state prison for fatally shooting an acquaintance in the face during an argument near a police station in Huntington Park.

Jorge Godoy of Huntington Park was found guilty of second-degree murder on Oct. 12, according to Deputy Los Angeles County District Attorney Seth Carmack, who prosecuted the case.

A jury had also found true that Godoy used a handgun to kill the victim, 31-year-old Daniel Ivan Santamaria Ramirez.

The two men were acquainted and Godoy “had tried to fight the victim” prior to the shooting on March 5, 2015, according to a district attorney’s office statement.

Godoy was near the Huntington Park Civic Center, less than a block away from a police station, when Ramirez approached and the two got into an argument, Carmack said.

Witnesses testified that when Ramirez refused to leave when Godoy asked, Godoy shot him in the face with a .44 Magnum.
