Sheriff’s investigators Wednesday were asking for your help to identify the killer of a 20-year-old man in a car-to-car shooting in Compton.

While authorities did not provide a sketch of the gunman, they asked the public for help if anyone has knowledge of the crime.

Jose Rafael Raya of Compton was fatally wounded about 6:45 p.m. on Dec. 17, a Saturday, at the intersection of 130th Street and Wilmington Avenue.

Raya was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Deputies were on routine patrol near 131st Street and Grape Avenue when they heard gunshots and rushed to an area north of Wilmington Avenue, sheriff’s Deputy Kimberly Alexander said.

They found Raya slumped over the steering wheel of a white sedan suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper torso, Alexander said.

An uninjured woman was seated on the passenger side, she said.

Deputies later learned the couple had been driving west on 130th Street approaching Wilmington when a white sedan pulled alongside them and someone inside opened fire through a passenger-side window.

The second car then left the scene, traveling eastbound on 130th Street, Alexander said.

Deputies asked anyone with information about the shooting to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500 or CrimeStoppers at (800) 222-8477.
