A man was killed Thursday when the car he was driving collided head-on with an SUV being driven the wrong way on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway in Arleta, authorities said.
It happened shortly before 2 a.m. south of Van Nuys Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The 38-year-old Palmdale man, who was driving a 2003 Mercedes-Benz, died at the scene, the CHP reported. His name was withheld, pending notification of kin.
The man driving the other vehicle, a 2007 GMC Acadia SUV, suffered major injuries, and was hospitalized and placed under arrest, the CHP reported. His name and age were not immediately released.
According to the preliminary investigation, the suspect was driving the SUV south in the northbound lanes when it slammed into the northbound Mercedes- Benz, the CHP reported.
“Alcohol and/or drugs are believed to be a factor in this collision,” a CHP statement said.
The northbound freeway lanes were closed until about 5:30 a.m. while an investigation was conducted. Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the CHP Altadena Area office at (626) 296-8100.
