An officer-involved shooting in Gardena left one man dead and another man in custody, authorities said Friday.

The shooting occurred at 10:27 p.m. Thursday in the 14100 block of Van Buren Court, said Deputy Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, whose detectives were assisting Gardena Police with the investigation.

The wounded man was taken to a hospital, where he died, said coroner’s Chief Brian Elias. Authorities withheld the name of the man, who was about 20 to 25 years old, pending notification of his relatives.

The name of the second suspect, who was not injured, was not immediately released.

Gardena officers were patrolling in the 1000 block of West Rosecrans Avenue when they noticed a disturbance in the parking lot of the business, the sheriff’s department reported.

“The officers stopped to assist the security guard in quelling the disturbance between several patrons,” according to a sheriff’s statement. “During the contact, one of the males fired at least one round in an unknown direction and fled westbound away from the parking lot.”

The officers followed the suspect, and he was shot about a block away, the sheriff’s department reported. Officers recovered two handguns believed to have belonged to the suspect.

No officers were injured.
