A man was fatally stabbed Sunday morning in El Monte in a possible gang attack and authorities were searching for his killer.

The stabbing took place about 11:40 a.m. in the 4200 black of Peck Road, according to Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez.

The victim was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The victim’s name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The sheriff’s department was assisting El Monte police in the homicide investigation, Navarro-Suarez said.

Detectives have learned the victim and his cousin were walking along Peck Road when a car pulled up along side them and a man got out and confronted the pair, according to Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez. The killer pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim in the chest. Then he jumped back in the car which then sped away.

The victim and his cousin then ran to a house on Peck Road where the now deceased man collapsed, Navarro-Suarez said.

No detailed description of the suspect was immediately available.
