The crash happened shortly after 911 callers reported that a car was heading north in the southbound lanes of the freeway, the City of Riverside Fire Department reported.
The wrong-way driver was traveling at a high-rate of speed and collided with a silver sedan, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The two vehicles sustained major front end damage and two people trapped inside the wreckage of the silver sedan suffered critical injuries. Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate the two victims.
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was also hospitalized with major injuries, according to the CHP.
The CHP was investigating whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
