A man was shot and killed and a woman was injured Sunday in the Athens Village community of unincorporated Los Angeles County.
The incident occurred about 12:30 a.m. in the 12700 block of South Avalon Boulevard, said Deputy Kelvin Moody of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Deputies on routine patrol heard gunshots at the location and when they arrived saw two men running towards and entering a black Honda Civic, Moody said.
As the car backed up, it allegedly struck a woman and a man lying on the street, near the center median, he said. The car then drove northbound on Avalon Boulevard.
Deputies followed the Honda and conducted a traffic stop near 124th Street and Avalon Boulevard, detaining the two suspects pending an assault with a deadly weapon investigation. It is still undetermined if they had a role in the shooting, he said.
“Deputies subsequently learned the man struck by the vehicle was shot in the chest at the location prior to being struck,” Moody said. “The woman sustained abrasions to her head and body.”
Paramedics rushed the man to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries, he said, and the woman was treated for her injuries.
“Detectives also learned that a second suspect vehicle, a white Nissan Sentra, was seen leaving the scene at the time the shooting occurred,” he said.
Sheriff’s homicide detectives asked anyone with any information regarding the shooting death to call them at (323) 890-5500.
