A 23-year-old probationer was arrested Friday when officers serving a search warrant at a home in Pomona allegedly found him in possession of a handgun.

Members of the Pomona Police Department’s Major Crimes Task Force were serving a warrant about 12:45 a.m. at the home at 1256 Essex Ave. when the suspect, identified as Alberto Peraza, exited from the back of the residence armed with a semi-automatic handgun, police said.

“When confronted by the officers, he fled back inside the residence, discarded the firearm and attempted to flee out the front door but was confronted by officers waiting at the door,” according to police.

Peraza surrendered without further incident.

A search of the home turned up the loaded firearm Peraza was suspected of possessing. It was seized along with several live ammunition rounds, police said.

Peraza was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

“It was also later discovered Peraza was on felony probation for previous unrelated crimes,” police said.

It was not immediately clear why the task force was serving a warrant at the home.
