Police said Wednesday the 82-year-old driver of an SUV could yet face charges after his vehicle fatally struck a Provo, Utah pedestrian in Long Beach and then dragged the victim under the SUV for a full block before being stopped by a law enforcement officer.

According to Long Beach Police, Dee Frank Daley, 60. was walking east on Seventh Street, attempting to cross Park Avenue from the southwest corner to the southeast corner, when he was struck by a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer about 1:20 a.m.

The 82-year-old Norwalk man behind the wheel of the Mountaineer “was traveling westbound on Seventh Street when he made a left turn to head southbound on Park Avenue, and the collision occurred,” police said.

The driver kept going, dragging Daley under the SUV for about a block on southbound Park Avenue, police said.

Meanwhile, an officer who was on patrol in the area pulled over the SUV at Sixth Street and Park Avenue, and firefighters pronounced Daley dead at the scene.

The driver and his female passenger were questioned and released.

“Possible charges against the driver are pending and the investigation remains ongoing,” police said.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call Detective David Lauro at (562) 570-7355, or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
