Interstate 10

A car-to-car shooting on Interstate 10 led authorities to shut down a stretch of the freeway Thursday while law enforcement investigated the incident.

The California Highway Patrol closed down westbound Interstate 10 at the Washington Street exit in Palm Desert at 6:30 p.m. Traffic was redirected off the freeway and back onto westbound lanes at Cook Street.

Details on the shooting, which occurred at around noon, were slim, but the freeway closure was expected to be brief, according to a CHP dispatcher.

The closure comes as traffic congestion into the desert was expected to build in anticipation of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, which begins its second weekend Friday in Indio.

However, that traffic will predominantly flow eastbound into the Coachella Valley, with the bulk of the congestion expected Friday morning.
