A Los Angeles man was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing a woman outside her grandparents’ Long Beach home after she cooperated with police in an anti- pimping investigation.
Superior Court Judge Mark C. Kim imposed the term on Jason Anthony Haggerty, 33, immediately after his no contest plea to first-degree murder for the July 25, 2013, shooting death of Jazzmine Wash.
Haggerty also admitted the special circumstance allegations of lying in wait and intentionally killing the 23-year-old woman because she was a witness to a crime.
Wash was shot to death in the 500 block of Walnut Avenue as she went out to a car to retrieve her 3-year-old son’s diaper bag.
Wash had recently begun prostituting for Haggerty and cooperated with police after he was apprehended by an anti-pimping task force about 1 1/2 weeks before her death, according to Deputy District Attorney Marilyn Seymour.
Haggerty subsequently traveled to Long Beach and shot her eight times as she left the residence where she was staying, according to the prosecutor.
He was arrested Sept. 9, 2013, for the killing and subsequently charged along with a 16-year-old girl whose case was later sent to a juvenile court as a result of a ballot measure approved by California voters last year. The status of the case against her was not immediately clear.
