Authorities Thursday sought public help to find the suspect in a white Maserati who shot and critically wounded a man in his late 70s in a parking lot at the Van Ness Recreation Center in the Hyde Park section of South Los Angeles.

The shooting occurred about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday at the park near the 5700 block of Second Avenue and Slauson Avenue, said Lt. Mark Green of the Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Street Station.

Because of gang activity in the area, the shooting was being investigated as possibly gang-related, Green said.

The man was wounded once in the chest and once in the right arm and taken to a hospital, Green said. The man was out of surgery as of 10:40 p.m. Sunday, and was expected to survive, the LAPD reported.

No further details were available, including information about the victim, his age, whether he was the intended target and any possible motive.

Anyone with information on the crime was urged to call (877) LAPD-247.
