The fate of a killer pit bull was being decided Thursday after the violent canine and two other pit bulls mauled a man and killed the victim’s small dog.
The other two pit bulls were killed by police gunfire in the attack in the Skid Row section of downtown Los Angeles. The third pit bull was shot, but survived.
The unidentified victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of multiple dog bites following the 8:30 a.m. attack Wednesday in the 500 block of Stanford Avenue, LAPD Officer Drake Madison said.
“A man in his 50s was walking his dog when he was attacked by the pit bulls,” Madison told City News Service. “Two of the pit bulls died at the scene, but the third one survived and was taken for medical treatment by Animal Control officers.”
Cell phone video taken during the attack showed officers using batons in a van attempt to stop the mauling prior to opening fire.
An area business owner told reporters the pit bulls lived on the grounds of a neighboring business, were allowed to briefly run free each morning after being let out of their enclosures and would typically obey the commands of a man who owns or tends to the dogs.
The owner of the pit bulls is cooperating with investigators and has not been arrested, police said.
