A brush fire that ignited Sunday in the Reche Canyon area, north of Moreno Valley has now charred more than 150 acres, according to Cal Fire Riverside.

The fire — reported at 2:58 p.m. near Reche Canyon Road and Haugen Drive — had burned an estimated 153 acres as of 8 p.m. and was about 60 percent contained, Jody Hagemann of the Riverside County Fire Department said.

Two hundred-plus firefighters, four water-dropping helicopters, four water tankers and 19 engine companies were battling the blaze, she said.

Before firefighters were dispatched, a man was seen trying to put the fire out with a water bottle and stomping on it, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The same area was scorched by a 17-acre brush fire in May.
