A natural gas line damaged by a contractor in Inglewood Wednesday prompted the closure of a section of Crenshaw Boulevard and some evacuations.

A “third-party” contractor using a jackhammer damaged a 3-inch steel gas line in the 3300 block West Century Boulevard about 9:25 a.m., said Melissa Bailey of the Southern California Gas Co.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the fire department evacuated about 50 to 60 people from (four) nearby businesses,” Bailey said.

No service outages were reported, she said.

Utility crews got the flow of gas stopped by about 2 p.m. and evacuations were lifted soon after, Bailey said.

Century Boulevard was reopened about 2:30 p.m., she said, though crews remained on site making permanent repairs.

“SoCalGas reminds residents and business owners to ‘call 811 before you dig’ in the yard or at construction sites,” Bailey said. “Calling 811 will help avoid possible injury or damage to hidden gas lines.”
