A Compton woman who may have been strangled was pronounced dead Friday at a hospital, and her live-in boyfriend was detained as a “person of interest,” authorities said.
Deputies went to the 12800 block of South Stoneacre Avenue at 2:23 a.m. on a medical emergency call, according to the sheriff’s department.
“When deputies arrived, they discovered a female was unresponsive,” said Deputy Grace Medrano. “As deputies assessed the female, they found marks on her neck which resembled ligature marks that correspond to a possible strangulation.”
Coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter identified the victim as 30-year-old Grecia Ayala and said an autopsy was pending to determine if strangulation was the cause of death.
Ayala lived in the rear house on the property with her boyfriend and their four children, two boys and two girls between the ages of 5 and 15, Medrano said.
“The boyfriend walked to the victim’s family, who lived in the front house, and told them he wanted to show them something,” Medrano said. “The victim’s family went to the rear house and saw the victim, who was unresponsive.”
The family then notified authorities.
“At the time of the murder, the 15-year-old son was present, but it is unknown if he witnessed the incident,” Medrano said. “The other three children were in the front house.”
Deputies detained the boyfriend but did not immediately arrest him, pending further investigation.
