A man in a wheelchair was killed when he was struck by a Union Pacific train in Pico Rivera, authorities said Saturday.

The deadly incident was reported shortly before midnight Friday in the area of Durfee Avenue and Stephens Street, said Lt. Sandra Peetoom of the Pico Rivera Sheriff’s Station.

The man died at the scene, Peetoom said.

Authorities provided no further details, and it wasn’t known why the victim in the wheelchair was on the tracks in the late-night darkness.

Train traffic was stopped on the tracks for the investigation but there were no street closures, authorities said.
