A suspect was in critical condition Monday after he was shot by a Long Beach police officer, authorities said Monday.
It happened about 11:35 p.m Sunday in the 800 block of Washington Place, said Long Beach police Sgt. Brad Johnson.
Officers at at 10:50 p.m. Sunday went to the 900 block of Washington Place, where a woman told them she was stabbed in the 800 block of Washington Place and that another woman was possibly being held against her will, police said.
“Additional officers responded and located the suspect at a residence in the 800 block of Washington Place,” Johnson said. “They could see the suspect through an open door holding a female adult against her will with an unknown stabbing instrument to her throat.”
Officers set up a containment and ordered the suspect to drop the weapon but he refused, the sergeant said, and the SWAT team was summoned.
“Officers negotiated with the suspect for approximately 30 minutes before the officer-involved shooting occurred,” Johnson said.
Officers rescued the hostage and started administering life-saving measures to the suspect, he said. Paramedics, who were already on the scene, took the suspect to a hospital, where he was in critical condition.
The stabbed woman had stable vital signs at a hospital where she was undergoing treatment for non-life-threatening wounds, Johnson said. No officers were injured.
