Cal Fire Riverside County firefighters were battling a wildfire in Riverside that has so far scorched more than 1,000 acres and forced mandatory evacuations from nearby homes.

The fire began about 4:10 p.m., near 300 Blaine St., according to Cal Fire spokeswoman Tawny Cabral.

The blaze quickly grew to f00 acres by 5 p.m., then 850 acres until now it’s at least 1,000, Cabral said.

The size of the fire forced officials to issue a mandatory evacuation order for all residences west of Hidden Springs Drive from Greenridge Drive to Country Gate Road, Cabral continued. An evacuation center was set up at Canyon Springs High School at 23100 Cougar Canyon Road in Moreno Valley.

So far 315 firefighters, 45 engine companies and four water-dropping helicopters have been dispatched to battle the flames.
