A man was killed Sunday in a fiery crash involving two vehicles on the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway near Santa Clarita and the second driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash on the northbound 14 Freeway, north of Soledad Canyon Road, occurred a little before 5:30 a.m. and involved a gray SUV and a light-colored sedan, the CHP said.

At least one of the vehicles was on fire at the center divider of the freeway.

According to the CHP accident report, 25-year-old Joe Lopez of Littlerock was driving his 2004 Toyota Matrix north on the 14 Freeway in the number 4 lane.

A second driver was parked in his 2007 Toyota Corolla, along the 14 Freeway, north of Soledad Canyon Road.

Lopez’s car drifted over on to the right shoulder and slammed into the rear of the Toyota.

The driver inside suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, the CHP said.  His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

It’s unknown if Lopez was injured. However, he was arrested at the scene, according to the CHP report. And “alcohol and/or drugs is suspected to be a factor in this collision,” the CHP said.
