A Chinese national arrested at Los Angeles International Airport is facing charges stemming from a hacking attack that netted personal information of tens of millions of federal employees from the computer system of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, it was announced Thursday.

Yu Pingan, 36, of Shanghai, was arrested Monday following the filing of a federal criminal complaint in San Diego that accused him of conspiracy with others to cause damage to a protected computer network, according to court documents.

The malware has been identified as being used in breaches in 2015 at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

The data theft was considered among the worst governmental computer attacks, resulting in the theft of personal information of tens of millions of federal employees.

An FBI spokeswoman confirmed the arrest.
