A man riding a bicycle was struck and killed by a car Thursday in Long Beach, according to police.

The bicyclist, who was about 50 years old, died at the scene of the 9:40 a.m. collision on Downey Avenue, between Hedda and La Jara streets, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

The victim, whose name was withheld pending notification of family, was riding northwest across the northbound lanes of Downey Avenue when he was struck by a 2013 Hyundai Genesis driven by a 20-year-old man from Hawaii, police said.

The driver said he saw the bicyclist crossing Downey Avenue diagonally and merged into the number two lane to avoid hitting him.

“At the same time the driver was changing lanes, the bicyclist made a right hand U-turn into … the path of the vehicle,” according to a police statement. “The driver could not avoid the bicyclist and collided with him.”

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision was urged to call Detective Sirilo Garcia of the Long Beach Police Department’s Collision Investigation Detail at (562) 570-7355.
