
A motorcyclist was killed and a nearby rider on another bike suffered major injuries when they slammed into a stopped SUV in the carpool lane on the San Diego (405) Freeway near Culver City.
The motorcyclist killed in the crash on the northbound freeway at Howard Hughes Parkway was identified as Daniel Steven Lape, of Oceanside, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Lape, riding a 2014 Honda CB500F, was in the carpool lane with another motorcyclist on a 2016 Yamaha R63 at 10:25 p.m. Saturday when they both rear ended a 2009 Lincoln Navigator that had stopped due to heavy traffic ahead.
The impact of the crash caused the SUV to be pushed forward into the rear of a Hyundai.
Paramedics rushed Lape to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. The other motorcyclist, Wyatt Jay Portis, 21, of Oceanside was also transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where was being treated for major injuries.
