The Riverside County Fire Department Wednesday announced the arrest of an alleged arsonist who fire investigators say set a vehicle on fire.

James Thompson Jr., 55, of Sky Valley was arrested Aug. 30 for allegedly burning a vehicle that day in the 23000 block of Hot Springs Road. Jail records indicate that Thompson, who was being held on $30,000 bail, was arrested on Hot Springs Road at about 4 a.m. The motive for the alleged arson was not disclosed.

Thompson was subsequently charged with arson and possession of flammable, combustible material or an incendiary device. He was also arrested on suspicion of attempting to escape an offense by force or violence, but was not charged as such by prosecutors last week.

Thompson, who pleaded not guilty to all charges last week, is next due in court Sept. 13 for a felony settlement conference.
