A husband and wife in their 70s were struck by a vehicle and critically injured Thursday while crossing a street near their home in the West Hills area.

The accident occurred about 7:30 a.m. at Faust Avenue and Stagg Street, and both pedestrians were hospitalized in critical condition, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison.

The motorist, in her 60s, remained at the scene and was interviewed by officers, said LAPD Detective Bill Bustos.

According to the preliminary investigation, the motorist was making a turn at the intersection at a slow speed when her vehicle struck the pedestrians, Bustos said.

There was no immediate indication that the woman was driving under the influence, Madison said.

The man was pinned beneath the vehicle for a time, according to reports from the scene.
