Police Monday used tear gas to flush a 19-year-old shooting suspect out of a Long Beach apartment where he had holed up.
Officers responded at 9:55 a.m. to an apartment complex in the 5400 block of Paramount Boulevard regarding a possible shooting, according to Nancy Pratt of the Long Beach Police Department.
“When officers arrived, they determined a shooting occurred, but were unable to locate a victim,” Pratt said.
Officers were told the suspect entered an apartment within the complex, so the area was surrounded, according to Pratt, who said the apartment’s occupants got out safely.
“Since it was possible the suspect was still inside, SWAT was activated,” Pratt said.
Attempts to establish contact with the suspect were unsuccessful, so about 3:20 p.m., the SWAT team fired tear gas into the apartment and the teenager surrendered, Pratt said.
The young man would be booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, she said. His name was not immediately available.
